The Ten Commandments are traditionally described in the Bible as being given to Moses on Mount Sinai, in the narrative found in the Book of Exodus and later recalled in the Book of Deuteronomy. According to this account, he went up the mountain, where he received the commandments from God, written on stone tablets, and brought them down to the people of Israel as a covenant or guiding law for how they should live.
